Posted Saturday, May 03, 2014 by Tim Hower

Noah Milliken and Chase Horton survived an epic three-set battle to claim the 4A East Regional doubles title on Saturday at Hoggard High School.

The duo advanced to next Thursday's state championships by downing South Central's Jonathan O'Neal and Jacob Matthews 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.

O'Neal and Matthews needed just one break to claim the first set and then got up a break in the second set..., before Milliken and Horton battled back. The Vikings pair took a 5-4 lead and finished off the set with a break of Matthews.

In the deciding set, Hoggard broke to take a 3-1 lead and finished off the match with two holds and another break.

Earlier in the day, Milliken and Horton downed New Hanover's Patrick Senior and Taylor Gaines 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.

It was the second regional title for Milliken, who teamed with Matt Johnson for the doubles title in 2012.

On Friday, the duo downed their opening opponents from Scotland County 6-1, 6-0 and then dismissed a team from Overhills 6-0, 6-0 in the
second round.
