Hoggard escapes with thrilling win

     It was a battle between two of the best teams in the state. In the end, Hoggard used its depth to come away with a 5-4 win over rival New Hanover on Thursday, April 8.
     The Vikings (9-1, 2-0 Mideastern) have now won eight consecutive matches. Hoggard won the first meeting between the teams 5-4.
     Just like in the first match, the teams split singles. New Hanover (8-4, 1-1) won at Nos. 1, 2 and 3. At No. 1, Alex Gaines was down a set before rallying for 10-6 win in the third-set tiebreaker. Hoggard's Philip Bonner evened the match with an incredible 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 4.
     Hoggard took a 4-3 lead when Chad Phelps and William Visser won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The Wildcats battled back with an 8-6 win at No. 1 to set up a dramatic finish.
    The Vikings' Philip Bonner and Matt Johnson trailed 7-6 with New Hanover serving for the match, but were able to secure a break. The Wildcats' Shaun Spicer and David Cox broke right back to take an 8-7 lead, but weren't able to serve it out. In the tiebreaker, Hoggard took a 7-4 lead before finally securing a 10-8 win.
